  1. Hypertension was a blood pressure of ≥140 mmHg systolic or ≥ 90 mmHg diastolic or use of antihypertensive drugs. Diabetes mellitus was a fasting plasma glucose level of ≥7.0 mmol/L or use of antidiabetic agents. The values were geometric means (interquartile ranges) for TSH and duration of atrial fibrillation, which needed a logarithmic transformation for normal distribution. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was calculated by the CKD-EPI creatinine Eq. (2009). The P values are for the significance of the differences between participants with and without follow-up examination
