Atrial fibrillation was defined as having an inpatient or outpatient claim with International Classification of Diseases Ninth Revision (ICD-9) code 427.31 or International Classification of Diseases Tenth Revision (ICD-10) codes I48.0, I48.1, I48.2, or I48.91 in the first or second diagnosis field. Valvular disease was defined as having ICD-9 codes 394.0, V43.3 or ICD-10 codes I05.0, Z95.2 at any diagnosis field
