Left ventricular myocardial function measured by peak global longitudinal strain (GLS) was significantly reduced in young adults born very premature or with extremely low birthweight (PB/ELBW) compared to controls. Mean GLS was − 19.4% (95% confidence interval (CI) -20.0, -18.9) in PB/ELBW and − 20.6% (95% CI -21.1, − 20.1) in controls (p = 0.003)
